Eating as Sādhanā

A Workshop To Explore

The Secrets of Nourishment as a Spiritual Activity

The Sanskrit word Sādhanā translates as "a means of accomplishing something" and usually refers to spiritual practices such as meditation, yoga, chanting or prayer.

We don't usually think of eating as a Sādhanā, but food is fundamental to everything we wish to accomplish spiritually and in the world.

from food life springs forth, by food it is sustained, and in food it merges when life departs "   Tattitirya Upanishad

Understanding the role food plays in the dance of Self-discovery is a fascinating and mystical process. Food is a major component which can either support or sabotage our journey.

So let's discover why the sages of old gave such importance to food, what we eat, how we eat, and what happens as food becomes our body and its effects on the invisible sheaths of mind, prana and intellect.

Drawing upon authoritative texts such as Ayurveda's Charak Samhita, and the Bhagavad Gita, we 'll delve into alchemical concepts around food such as:

  • Yajyna Fire Ritual - a mirror of digestion and transformation
  • Agni - 13 types of digestive fire within us
  • Ahimsa - why non-injuring foods are the best foundation for spiritual practices.
  • Subtle dimensions of Vata, Pitta and Kapha and "What's love got to do with it"

We'll begin with a short Vedic Fire called Vyahruti Homa to sanctify and nourish the environment.

And of course, we'll prepare some lovely food too!!
